Financial Independence - A Glance at
the Future
A Short
Story - By our Staff Writer
One breezy Saturday
evening I was strolling along the
Indian Ocean beach with my
8-year-old daughter Sara in the
outskirts of Dar es Salaam. The
sunset was beautiful and the cool
breeze was very refreshing. It was
relaxing...
I was just about to
suggest that we go back to the car
when Sara screamed while pointing in
front of her, “Isn’t that money
Daddy?” I looked around and saw
a shiny new note, Tshs. 10,000!
She started running
after it but the wind kept sweeping
it away as soon as she was about to
pick it up. At some point she
seemed like she was giving up but
then she stopped to think for a
minute, and then started running
after it again. This time instead
of leaning to pick it up she put her
foot forward first to stop the note
from being swept by the wind. Then
she turned back to me and smiled, “I
got it Daddy!” She then leaned
forward and carefully released the
note from her foot picking it up
with her hand.
I thought this was a
nice opportunity to talk to her
about the principles of money.
I explained to her
that the simple thing that she just
did was very symbolic of what she
needs to do when managing her money.
Personal management
of money involves looking ahead,
examining the current situation and
obstacles, planning strategies,
analyzing the risks involved with
the options you choose and finally
making that careful move that will
enable you get a hold of the
financial independence you have been
dreaming of.
Most of the time you
will come across difficult
situations, sometimes you feel like
giving up and other times new ideas
on how to go about the whole process
will come to mind. What we need to
do is to look into the future,
figure out what we want to do and
take a chance.
